Cleaning after the Marshall fire in Boulder, Superior, and Louiseville CO

The Marshall fire caused extensive damage to the communities in Boulder County, CO.

As Boulder County and its surrounding areas try to recover after the devastating Marshall fire, some of those in our community may be wondering how to return to their everyday life and restore their property to pre-fire and pre-smoke condition.  If any smoke, soot, or ash entered your home, the sooner clean up starts the better, as the debris from fires can cause lasting damage if left on surfaces.   We care about our community and want you to be able to save the important items in your home or business.  

One of the most effective solutions for removing fire damage and controlling odors left behind is TSP, or tri-sodium phosphate.  TSP can be mixed into different solutions depending on what needs to be cleaned.  TSP is corrosive, so if you choose to use it, make sure to wear rubber gloves to protect yourself and read any warning labels.

Some recommendations from the Red Cross on the usage of TSP

For clothes:

Mix 5 tablespoons TSP in with laundry detergent before washing with warm water.

For walls, floors, and furniture:

Mix 5 tablespoons TSP with 1cup household cleaner into a gallon of water.  After being washed from the floor up to prevent streaking, all areas should be rinsed with warm water then dried.

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic has reminded all of us how important it is to properly clean the surfaces and objects we handle.

How to Prepare Important Documents for a Water Emergency in Devil’s Thumb

Keep your important documents somewhere safe in Devil's Thumb.

Even though we are in a digital age these days, some people still keep paper documents filed neatly in their drawer or a file folder (or somewhere else). However, what happens if those important documents are destroyed due to a water emergency or a flood caused by a storm? It can be so hard to track down copies of those documents and this leads to unnecessary stress among other difficulties depending on what the documents are for.

SERVPRO® of Greater Boulder wants to share the following tips with the residents of Devil’s Thumb:

• Scan and back up images to a thumb drive and keep it in a safe, dry space
• Keep paper documents in a water-proof bag or safe
• Laminating documents is also an option but keep in mind that lamination does not last forever
• Some companies do offer waterproof paper that you can use in a printer

It is not too late to start moving important documents over to a digital copy or hard drive, or into a waterproof safe if that is what you prefer. No matter the method you choose, keeping the documents safe from water damage is the important part.
